The Shellback Club was started in 1934 by a group of local sailors interested in meeting during the winter for fellowship and to replay the summer's sailing events. The Club meets weekly from October to mid-April for lunch and listen to speakers on maritime adventures and other nautical topics. (In February Lori Mason of The Store - Mason's Chandlery will be talking about WOW and anything new in marine equipment.)
There are no annual fees but to become a Shellback and share a lunch with them - you need to sing a shanty. (Solos not required.)
The Shellback guys and gals meet every Wednesday 12:15PM sharp at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club - 141 St. George Street - N of the Bloor Subway Station (416-967-7245). Lunches are around $15, extra for wine or beer.
No need to make reservations or tell anyone you're coming - just drop by when you're in the neighbourhood. The Shellbacks are a relaxed kind of crowd. Just remember to bring your guitar for the shanty!! :)
October Schedule of Events -
October 13 - Paul Henderson
Paul will talk about his new book 'The Pope of Sailing'. But Paul will also probably talk about anything else that's on his mind like the Pan Am Games sailing plans. Always fun to listen to Paul.
October 20 - Rodney Smith
Rodney and his friends chartered a 42' Beneteau in Raiatea in the Society Islands and sailed the Leeward group for 3 weeks - Hauhine, Bora-Bora, Raiatea and Tahaa. Here him chat about his 'absolutely magnificent trip'.
October 27 - Greg Nicoll
Greg Nicoll and John Kerr of Canadian Yachting went on the Great Malt Cruise on the west coast of Scotland. An annual event for 90 to 100 yachts combining sailing, malt whiskey, beautiful scenery, plenty of wind and camaraderie. Greg always has a good story to tell!
