WOW Ladies Only Race Nights Begin..

This is a report from Jen Zimmerman of Ashe at LSYC on the WOW Ladies Only Race Night held June 14.

A total of 7 boats in all, crossed the start line with bodies equaling 29! The race started off with just a breath of wind that kept swirling around the fleet. So we all waited with baited breath – “are we going to have another drifter”, I thought to myself. The light breeze finally settled down to a warm offshore and 2 boats were off with spinnakers blazing on tight beam reaches.

Just before the boats reached the first race mark the wind decided to slam the fleet with 15-18 knots of wind, with no warning. On Ashe the little 3,000 lb Bombardier, we still had the spinnaker up and quickly doused it as 2 of the four crew were new and the boat was set up for light winds (VERY light winds). With rails in the water, all boats rounded mark 5 and the fleet took off to mark 4.
But where was mark 4? It was there on the 13th of June but now… This is the second time in 3 years mark 4 has gone missing from the race course at Lakeshore Yacht Club, maybe there is some kind of Bermuda Triangle in that vicinity? If anyone wants the GPS coordinates so they can avoid the area – let us know.

All boats crossed the finish line and we headed in for some good laughs and great food cooked by The Store - Mason's Chandlery and then a rainbow could be seen against the dark clouds reaching from the North Shore of Lake Ontario to the South Shore. What a night!

If you are interested in racing on a boat or bringing your boat to the next WOW race night, contact Lori at The Store - info@thestoremasons.com or Jen of Ashe at jen@thelazycat.ca. Our next race is scheduled for Monday, July 12, 2010.

I would love to see more boats out and more Women on the Water. For those of us who raced last night, keep checking the Lakeshore Yacht Club website for the results, as they will be posted as soon as possible – www.lsyc.com.

The Story behind 'The Store'

My Photo
Mississauga (Port Credit), Ontario, Canada
Thirty years ago, Jack Mason came home from his sales job of 25 years and said, “I would rather open a marine store, one store to get everything you need!” Jack and Bette (an Island girl) met at Queen City Yacht Club, married, had children, dogs and many, many boats. On April 7 1978, “The Store” Mason's Chandlery was opened in the Port Credit Harbour Marina. It was designed to be a one-stop marine hardware store. Boaters could find everything they needed to maintain their boats, right down to the nuts and bolts! Today, the Mason legacy continues as Lori has becomes the second generation. Mason's continues to provide the same great customer service and exceptionally wide range of product. Mason's stock environmentally safe products and were the first retail store to earn the Green Leaf Eco-rating Award. Mason's has qualified staff, special events; seminars and are producers of the Port Credit Boat Show. Our goal is to continue our top customer service, variety of inventory, competitive prices, and provide the absolute best for our patrons, whether they are experienced seafarers or first time boaters. We work for our customer!
